Founded in 1958, the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine has established subspecialties for coronary heart disease, hypertension, arrhythmia, cardiac failure. In 1972, it implanted the first permanent cardiac pacemaker in southern China. In 1991, it began treating supraventricular arrhythmia through radiofrequency ablation. In 2000, it applied cardiac resynchronization devices to chronic cardiac failure patients. The Department features device implantation and interventional therapy for cardiovascular diseases. It is currently home to the Interventional Therapy Training Base of Arrhythmia & Coronary Heart Disease of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, as well as chair units and vice chair units of many national and provincial special committees.


As an authorized department to grant master and doctoral degrees and to offer postdoctoral programs, it has gained support from the NSFC for 21 projects and from other foundations for another 102 projects in the last 10 years, with the total support exceeding 4.7 million US dollars. The Department also published 128 SCI papers.
