Founded in 1949, the Department of Medical Imaging boasts advanced facilities and strong technological strength. In 2001, it introduced the first nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) instrument in Guangdong. In 2005, it started using the first 64-slice CT scanner in Guangdong. Its specialty stands at the international advanced level in research areas like peripheral nerve injury and molecular imaging. In 1993, it took the lead in China in conducting the clinical application and scientific research of MR neurography. In 2003, it was also one of the pioneers in carrying out the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) study in stem cell and gene therapies.
In recent years, it has attained 7 fund programs sponsored by NSFC and 1 group research program supported by Natural Science Fund of Guangdong. Its staff members published almost 50 papers in SCI and participated in the research programs supported by Guangdong Joint Fund. Moreover, it has won many "first" among SYSU's departments of radiology profession in recent years: first to be included in the Program for New Century Excellent Talents (2012); first to become the provincial training object of Talents Project in Guangdong (2014); and the first to be included in excellent MA papers in Guangdong (2014).
