Also called the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU), was originally founded in 1835 as an eye clinic by the American missionary named Dr. Peter Parker. It is the first hospital in China that provided western medical service and the primary place where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the great revolutionary forerunner, studied medicine and later pursued the path to build a democratic nation. With an exciting period of growth and expansion for about 179 years, the hospital has developed into a Class A teaching hospital in China, famous for its medical service, education, research and health care.
As a pioneer in western medicine practice, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital is the hospital that practiced the first ophthalmological surgery, the first ovariotomy, the first lithocystotomy, the first etherization, and the first pathological anatomy in China. It also had China’s first X-ray film shot and the first medical magazine printed. After founding China’s first western medical school with the name of Boji Medical School, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital nurtured the nation’s first medical overseas student and nurse. Known as the cradle of China’s western medicine practice and one of the birthplaces of China’s medical talents, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital has been a keen contributor to China’s medical causes, thanks to the devotion of many famous medical experts and educators such as Lin Shumo, Chen Yaozhen, Xie Zhiguang, Zhong Shifan, Qin Guangyu, Chen Xintao, Zhou Shoukai, Mao Wenshu and Chen Guozhen.
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital now owns three hospital campuses and one clinic: the Northern Campus (the Headquarter), the Southern Campus, the Zengcheng Campus and the clinic at the Southern Campus of SYSU. Its staff number exceeds 4,200, including two Chang Jiang Scholars (also known as Cheung Kong Scholars), one Chief Scientist for the 973 Project, 429 senior professionals, 58 PhD supervisors, and 138 Master supervisors. Among the medical professionals, five are vice chairs of state-level academic associations, 12 are chairs of provincial academic associations, and 13 are vice chairs of provincial associations. With more than 2,200 inpatient beds available, the hospital performs over 50,000 inpatient operations, discharges about 80,000 inpatients, and handles more than 3 million outpatient visits annually.
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital continues to seek breakthroughs in medical science. It has nine nation-level key clinical specialties, 23 province-level key clinical specialties, one key high-education laboratory of provincial level, one key medical laboratory for the Twelfth Five-Year Plan of Guangdong Province, and two key medical disciplines for the Twelfth Five-Year Plan of Guangdong Province. Moreover, it has constantly won the sponsorship from the "973" and "863" National Projects, the A3 International Cooperation Project of the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Science and Technology Major Project. In recent years, the hospital has consistently been one of the best hospitals in Guangdong Province in terms of receiving the research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Moreover, the hospital has increased its academic influence by publishing research articles at prestigious academic journals including Cell and Cancer Cell. In 2012, it published over 200 papers at SCI journals, with a total impact factor of 350 odd.

For example, there are interventional treatment for coronary heart disease, and radiofrequency ablation treatment for atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in the department of Cardiology; diagnosis and treatment of diabetes in the department of Endocrinology; correction of spinal deformity, diagnosis and treatment of degenerative disc disease, surgical treatment of spinal tumor, arthroscopic ligament reconstruction, and artificial joint revision in the department of Orthopedics Surgery; comprehensive treatment for large hepatocellular carcinoma in the department of Hepatobiliary Surgery; breast and axillary preserving surgery, and adjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer in the department of Breast Surgery; minimally invasive surgery of urological tumor in the department of Urology; treatment of gynecological endocrine diseases, human assisted reproductive technology, diagnosis and treatment of cervical lesions, and diagnosis and combined therapy of cervical cancer in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; diagnosis and treatment of hereditary hemolytic anemia, leukemia, aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia purpura, lymphoma and other solid tumors, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation of children in the department of Pediatric hematology; diagnosis and treatment of medical fungi, lupus erythematosus and other connective tissue diseases in the department of Dermatology.
With the efforts of all the staff, the hospital has constantly won top rankings as well as recognitions in the medical field. This is the first hospital in Guangdong Province that has been rated as a Class A tertiary general hospital by the Ministry of Health in China. It has been enlisted as one of the “Model Hospitals” at both provincial and national level. It has also been awarded as one of the “Advanced Units” in the medical field by the Ministry of Health in China and “A Hundred Best Hospital” in Guangdong Province.
