The only treaty port in China during the Ming and early Qing Dynasty, Guangzhou became the location for the British East India Company, which hired doctors to offer medical services to its staff in Guangzhou and Macau. Among the doctors were Dr. Alexander Pearson, Dr. Robert Morrison, and Dr. Thomas R. Colledge, etc. whose work were part-time, scattered and short-termed. It was not until the year 1835 when the first U. S. medical missionary Peter Parker was sent to Guangzhou and established the Ophthalmic Hospital at the Thirteen Hongs that the first real hospital came into being and started to spread its influence.
